Impressive but Not Imposing: How Bowflex SelectTech Saves You Time, Space, Money and More

Bowflex built its reputation on providing fitness solutions that, in one form or another, reduce the usual workout “cost” (inconvenience) to you, the consumer. Now Bowflex SelectTech technology allows you to save time, space and money by replacing several workout weights with one or two selectorized units that allow you to dial in the amount of weight you want to lift. This innovation is available with Bowflex SelectTech 840 Kettlebells, the Bowflex SelectTech 2080 Barbell with Curl Bar, and the Bowflex SelectTech 552, 1090 and 560 Dumbbells. Here’s how they make life – even an active life – easier:

No-Wait Weight Selection

SelectTech turbo-charges the idea of a “quick change.” It doesn’t rely on jet engines or fibre optics, just a truly ingenious mechanical innovation. In seconds, you can literally “dial in” the weight you want to lift, leaving the weight you don’t want to lift neatly behind. The cleverly simple design of the 840 Kettlebell might remind you of a Russian egg doll. Dial in 12 lbs and you’ll pick up the top 8 lb and 4 lb layers, leaving the others on the base or “cradle.”

The 552 and 1090 SelectTech Dumbbells feature an array of locking plates that add up to each unit’s total weight. To lift 25 pounds, dial it in on both ends of the dumbbell. An apparatus that works like the safe tumbler will lock in an evenly distributed selection of plates, totalling 25 lbs. The remaining plates are released to wait upright in the cradle. When you’re done with your set, your dumbbell naturally interlocks with those other plates, allowing you to dial in a new weight. You don’t always have to select the same weight on both ends. The 552 and 1090 allow you to dial up the uneven weight some athletes use to isolate certain muscles. The SelectTech 560 allows you to change weights on both ends by twisting the grip (like revving a motorcycle). That same functionality is applied to the 2080, which allows users to dial up from 20 to 80 lbs of weight for their barbell or curl bar workouts. They can also purchase an optional upgrade to bring their lifts up to 120 lbs.

Compare that process to the traditional free weight experience – walking to a rack to exchange a dumbbell or spending extra time exchanging weight plates. Speed isn’t the only SelectTech advantage.

Saving More Than Time

Not everyone has a huge garage, basement or workout room to store a wide variety of dumbbells and/or kettlebells. If you live in a smaller apartment or condo, you already have a compelling reason to consider a compact SelectTech weight.

Calculate how much more room you’d surrender if you bought enough free weights to replace the Bowflex SelectTech 1090. You’d be looking at 17 dumbbells, with each one occupying an average area of about .66 square feet. Now consider that most users double up on that to get an even two-handed workout. The total 34 weights could take 22.4 square feet before you add the rack – a sizable imposition on your personal space. Compare that to the total 2.4 square-foot footprint of two 1090s – or less than six square feet for the largest Bowflex SelectTech two-dumbbell rack.

Here’s another point to ponder: price. Acquiring all those weights could run you into the thousands of dollars, which makes the SelectTech option the far superior value. And you can obtain it in one trip to the store, compared to buying on the installment plan due to your limited budget or vehicle capacity.

Time to Grow

Not only do Bowflex Weights save you workout and shopping time, but they’re also supported by smart device-accessible resources that can make you fitter faster.

The Bowflex 840 SelectTech Kettlebell offers 24 trainer-led exercise videos (11 beginner and 13 advanced) featuring foundational kettlebell techniques and best practices for tighter abs, firmer legs, sculpted arms, and a strong chest.

The Bowflex 552 and 1090 Dumbbells offer pre-loaded workouts that allow you to target specific areas like arms, chest, back, legs, and core – or you can opt for the 6-week challenge, the classic Bowflex 6-week total body program. Offered through the Bowflex SelectTech App (available on Google Play and The App Store), the online training includes step-by-step coaching videos and manual progress tracking. But your phone or tablet can do even more when it's connected to the Bowflex SelectTech 560 Dumbbell.

The Bowflex 2080 offers a total of 14 workout videos, showing you the right form for 10 barbell and 14 curl bar exercises.

The Future of Saving Time

There’s a reason they call the Bowflex SelectTech 560 “the world’s smartest dumbbell”: Bluetooth Technology.

Bluetooth empowers you to streamline your progress tracking by syncing your smart device directly with your Bowflex SelectTech 560 Dumbbell. Download the free Bowflex 3DT (3-Dimensional Training) app to your phone or tablet then push a sensor button on your 560. Once you’re linked, you can pull your selected weight from its cradle and tap the “Just Lift” mode button on your smart device display. The 3DT app will automatically track your goals, progress, and calories burned as you work out. The results are yours to share with your friends and/or external fitness apps like Apple Health and Google Fit. You’ll also have access to advanced video coaching to make sure your form is perfect and you’re always getting the most from every workout.
